Junior Hockey
The county provides support for Schools and Junior Club Sections to develop and compete.
The county has access top two Hockey Development Officers (HDOs). One HDO is supplied by England Hockey and by the Association:
Gill Thomson, the England Hockey HDO, supports any Clubs First applications and
publicises England Hockey initiatives.
Mark Atherton, the Surrey HA HDO, has a far more hands-on type role fostering School-Club
links, promoting courses, general development work and co-ordination of the JDCs.
The county runs a number of school and club tournaments, most of which lead to regional rounds. The Tournament Organiser is Richard Nixon.
The county runs the early stages of elite programme within England Hockey’s Single System. The Junior Development Centres (JDCs) are for the better Club and School players. They are at each age group from U13 to U17 for both boys and girls, they aim to provide between 10 and 18 high level coaching including specific goalkeeper coaching. At the end of the JDC a Junior Academy (JAC) squad of around 25 players who form the county squad.
